About
Specialist women’s health, delivered with depth and clarity.
I’m Dr Jan Adlam, a gynaecologist and urogynaecologist. My work centres on careful listening, clear explanation, and decisions grounded in evidence.
Many women arrive having been told that their symptoms are “normal”, “just hormonal”, or “something you must live with”. My role is to slow things down, take those concerns seriously, and help you understand what’s actually happening in your body.
You should leave a consultation with a plan that makes sense.

What sets my practice apart
As a certified subspecialist in urogynaecology, a significant part of my work involves patients with complex pelvic floor conditions — women who have had failed surgery, recurrence, or complications, and who often arrive feeling exhausted, uncertain, or unheard.
These cases require time, precision, and continuity. They cannot be rushed. They cannot be reduced to a single visit.
I remain involved with my patients. I do not offer a once-off opinion and disappear. We define clear goals together, and I stay with you through the process of reaching them.
Patient education is central to how I work. Understanding your body and your condition is not a luxury. It is part of good care. I take time to explain, to draw, to translate medical language into something that makes sense. You should never feel brushed off or dismissed.
My consultations are deliberately thorough. My surgery is meticulous. I place strong emphasis on minimally invasive techniques wherever appropriate, with the aim of reducing recovery time and helping you return to life sooner.
Care should feel thoughtful. It should feel steady. And it should leave you with clarity about what comes next.
What I do
I provide comprehensive gynaecological and urogynaecological care, with a focus on conditions that affect quality of life and long-term health.
Gynaecology
Abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, cervical screening and colposcopy, contraception, pre-pregnancy planning, and modern menopause care.
Urogynaecology
Urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, bladder pain syndromes, recurrent UTI-like symptoms, pelvic organ prolapse, and vaginal or vulval pain conditions.
If something feels wrong, confusing, or simply “not normal” for you, it deserves proper assessment. My job is to take that seriously and explain your options clearly.
How I work
Precision
Focused history-taking and targeted examination. No fishing expeditions. No hand-waving.
Clarity
Plain-language explanations and a written plan you can refer back to after the appointment.
Care that actually matters
Stepwise management, shared decisions, and thoughtful escalation when it’s needed.
Professional background
I obtained my medical degree at the University of Pretoria in 2012 and completed my internship training across multiple hospitals in Cape Town, including Groote Schuur, Mitchells Plain, Red Cross Children’s Hospital, and Mitchells Plain District Hospital. I then completed my community service at Khayelitsha District Hospital, already working within gynaecology.
After several years as a medical officer in Cape Town, I entered specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2017 and obtained my Fellowship from the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2021. During this time, I completed a Master’s dissertation on severe early-onset pre-eclampsia, strengthening my foundation in evidence-based, high-risk care.
I then completed subspecialist fellowship training in Urogynaecology at Stellenbosch University, qualifying in 2024. This advanced training focuses on complex pelvic floor disorders, including recurrent prolapse, failed previous surgery, and complications from earlier procedures.
I opened my practice at Life Bay View Hospital in Mossel Bay in early 2024 and am now relocating to Life Kingsbury Hospital in Cape Town, where I will continue providing specialist and subspecialist care.
I am a member of SAUGA (South African Urogynaecology Association), ICS (International Continence Society), and SASOG (South African Society of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists).
